Direct Thermal Barcode/Label Printers Direct thermal on the other hand requires no ribbon. It works by creating an image directly on the label. Direct thermal printing requires the use of special heat sensitive paper or labels. The only downside is that labels and barcodes printed with a direct thermal printer fade over time or when they are exposed to heat (such as direct sunlight). Industrial Barcode/Label Printers If you're planning on printing a high volume of labels or barcodes on a regular basis, you will need an industrial printer. These are designed to print more labels in one go. They can take a 76mm core label roll allowing more than 2000 labels per roll, compared to a standard printer which can only take a 38mm core roll with 1000 labels per roll. Portable Barcode/Label Printers If you print labels on the go, a portable barcode/label printer is the way to go. With a strap you can hang it from your shoulder or have it with you in the car and print as you go. Thermal Transfer Barcode/Label Printers In thermal transfer printing, a thermal print head applies heat to a ribbon, which melts ink onto the paper or labels to form an image. This makes the labels or barcodes more durable than ones printed with a direct thermal printer.

• Thermal Label Printers: As the name indicates this type of label printer uses heat to transfer ink from the ribbon onto the heat sensitive label paper. • Inkjet Label Printers: Obviously inkjet label printers require ink to operate which can be troublesome for many consumers but if in need of color labels they are definitely the better option. Inkjet label printers are great for small to medium sized businesses as they deliver high-quality results at a very affordable cost.
  
• Industrial Label Printers: These are ideally suited for both factories and large distribution centers. These heavy-duty machines are best sued in situations that demand continuous, high-speed operation.
