Touch Terminals

Touch TerminalsBuyers Guides > Touch Terminals

If you are thinking about purchasing a touch screen terminal, the user experience is of the utmost importance. You want to make the on-screen menus easy to navigate and allow the users to clearly view the terminals display. The types of touch screen and display you choose depends on your type of business and how you plan to use it.
  • Resistive touch screens are the most common; they are great for demanding point of sale environments, industrial, and medical facilities. They can be used with a finger, a gloved hand, or a stylus (a pointing aid such as a pen tip or plastic stylus). Resistive touch screens are durable, and dirt-resistant, but the clarity of the display is low and the screen is sensitive to sharp objects.
  • Surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology is a good choice for high traffic businesses. SAW displays offer high picture clarity and resolution, but the screen isn't sealed, so it is more susceptible to damage.
  • Capacitive screens are a durable, high clarity choice for industrial businesses and restaurants. They are made with a tight seal to keep dirt out. However, the touch screen only responds to your fingertips (without gloves).
  • Infrared touch screens can handle the dusty and harsh conditions of warehouses and factories, included gloved users, but are difficult to view in direct sunlight. Most terminals are Liquid crystal display (LCD) screens because of their thin form and high quality. LCDs can also run with limited problems after several years of intense use.

What is the difference between Touch Terminals and Touch Monitors?

Touch screens are just that. Just like any other monitor, you will need a pc to connect it to. A touch terminal however, is an all in one system. Touch terminals come with a PC included and usually an operating system pre-loaded. All you need is your POS software and your ready to go. Some terminals come with an integrated card reader, others come without. If you need card reading capability, you will either need to purchase one with a card reader already installed, or purchase one separately that can be connected to the terminal. Not all terminals are able to do this.

Things to Consider Before you Purchase

  • Environment (Where will the terminal be placed?)
  • Use Level (How will it be used and how often?)
  • Position (Is it in an outdoor or sunny environment that will make it difficult to view?)
