The leading supplier of printing and scanning solutions, Epson America, Inc. announced that five airports in the United Kingdom have chosen Epson’s TM-L90 thermal printer. These airports are Belfast International, Robin Hood Airport, Humberside International, Leeds/Bradford Airport, and Durham Tees Valley Airport. This will be the machine that will be used to print boarding passes. Annually, the five airports are responsible for the transportation of over 2 million passengers to 241 destinations around the world. Beginning in October of 2009, the transition being handled by Servisair, a aviation service company, will be completed in September of 2010.
The low efficiency and costs associated with printing the vast number of boarding passes using traditional printers is one reason the airports have selected Epson as a replacement. Epson products are among the most efficient available on the market .Kris Kristmanns, Director of Operations Support for Servisair, commented on the replacement process. "With new compliance regulations, the wallet style boarding card is no longer required, allowing airports to take advantage of more affordable options, like traditional Point-of-Sale receipt printers. So far, the Epson printers have been easily integrated into the airlines' PC-based systems and they have proven to be extremely reliable in this environment, where thousands of boarding passes are printed every day."
There is a movement in the airline industry to move towards printers and devices that offer increased toughness, extended life cycle, and ease of use. These printers will provide more sound investment and many benefits, such as less space at gates and check-in kiosks.
